How the Retirement Population has changed over the last 20 yearsRetirement today is a whole new phase in Life. It brings with it new and different needs and changes in lifestyles. Prior to the mid-1980s, older American men have been a constantly declining percentage of the total labor force. This reflected Americans' increased wealth which many male members of the labor force chose to "spend" on earlier retirement. In 1950, 72 percent of men aged 65 were still in the labor force while by 1985, this had dropped to 30 percent. In the mid-1980s these long-term trends have stopped, and partially reversed themselves. Between 1985 and 2004, the active labor participation rates for men increased by 10 percent among 62 year-olds, 24 percent among 65 year-olds and by nearly 50 percent among 70 year-olds. For older women, the story is similar. Between the mid-1960s and the mid-1980s, their workforce participation rates were flat. But since the mid-1980s, active labor participation rates for older women have increased dramatically and continue to rise today. Many more older men and women are working today than trends prior to 1985 would have predicted. Retirement changes your Expectations and Demand on Life
